SUSTAINABILITY

A path towards environmental, economic, social and cultural sustainability

OUR COMMITMENT TO A SUSTAINABLE DESTINATION

Sustainability is becoming increasingly central in everyday choices, including when it comes to holidays. More and more people are choosing destinations and accommodation facilities that pay attention to the environment, the local economy and the well-being of communities.

For this reason — in collaboration with Trentino Marketing – ATA Area — we decided to join the GSTC certification programme promoted by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) on two levels:

➔ involving an initial group of more than 20 accommodation facilities within the area that showed particular sensitivity towards these topics through a dedicated support programme;
➔ activating a destination-wide process aimed at pursuing the environmental, social, economic and cultural sustainability of the territory and of the people who live, work and stay in Garda Trentino, through participatory sessions involving more than 70 local stakeholders.

On this page, we explain how we worked towards obtaining the GSTC certification, which tools we implemented and which documents were produced throughout the process. You will also find useful resources — especially if you manage an accommodation facility — to further improve the quality of your services by integrating sustainable practices into your daily operations.

Obtaining the certification is an important milestone, but it represents only one step in a long-term strategic journey: sustainability — environmental, economic, social and cultural — is one of the pillars of our Stay Young positioning and will continue to guide the development of Garda Trentino in the years to come 💚

WHY GSTC #1
A sustainability-driven choice

GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) is an international non-governmental organisation recognised by the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization), promoting sustainability and social responsibility in the tourism sector worldwide.

At a time when sustainability is widely discussed — and where the risk of superficial “greenwashing” initiatives is high — adopting a recognised international certification represents a concrete and credible choice.

Joining the GSTC pathway means addressing the environmental and social challenges linked to tourism in a serious and structured way, while defining a long-term improvement strategy.

WHY GSTC #2
Six good reasons

We chose GSTC for several reasons:

➔ it is an international standard, providing the foundation for sustainable tourism commitment;
➔ it is recognised worldwide by institutions, tourists and major intermediaries;
➔ it was created by tourism professionals for the tourism sector, meaning its principles are tourism-based rather than purely technical or engineering-driven;
➔ it is a third-party standard, ensuring transparency and independent verification;
➔ it provides access to an international community of partners and stakeholders;
➔ it includes all dimensions of sustainability, including management, socio-economic, cultural and environmental aspects.

GSTC: FULL SPEED AHEAD!

The journey of our accommodation facilities

During 2024 and 2025, we supported a group of around 20 accommodation facilities in Garda Trentino through a pathway towards GSTC certification, providing tools, opportunities for discussion and operational support.

Here is what we achieved together:

Kick-off meeting (7th March 2024) with the participation of Vireo — one of the few GSTC certification bodies active in Italy — and a testimonial from a certified accommodation facility in South Tyrol. More than 30 local operators actively participated in the meeting;

Informational webinar (15th March 2024) organised with Trentino Marketing to provide deeper insights into the process and answer questions, followed by a second update meeting on 14 April of the same year;

Operational meeting (14th January 2025) dedicated to facilities that chose to complete the certification process by the end of the year. The meeting took place with the support of Trentino Marketing, Vireo and Virtou, the partner company that guided facilities step by step throughout the process.

This journey strengthened awareness about the importance of sustainability in the hospitality sector and helped create a network of accommodation operators united by a shared vision.

TOOLS AND DOCUMENTS

Throughout the GSTC certification process, we produced a range of materials designed to support accommodation facilities in transitioning towards more sustainable management models.

Here you can download the documents we presented, illustrating how we aim to turn sustainability principles into concrete actions.

Being a GSTC-certified hotel means offering authentic and responsible hospitality. From the conscious management of resources to supporting the territory and the people working within it, every choice aims to reduce impact, generate shared value and continuously improve. For us, 360° sustainability is an integral part of hospitality.

The destination journey

Alongside the work carried out with accommodation facilities, we also launched the process to obtain GSTC certification for the Garda Trentino destination itself.

This process was not only useful in evaluating our level of sustainability — environmental, economic, social and cultural — but also allowed us to rethink existing projects and strategies, and to identify more clearly the priority areas on which to focus in the coming years.

Once again, the process was developed consistently with our Stay Young positioning, which looks at the well-being of both the community and the environment through a long-term perspective.

As always, we adopted a participatory planning approach, involving local stakeholders with the support of Trentino Marketing – ATA Area and Etifor, a consulting company and spin-off of the University of Padua specialised in sustainability pathways for territories.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE PROCESS
Sharing, listening and collective responsibility

The path towards GSTC certification included an important phase of data collection and analysis through both quantitative and qualitative tools.

We involved guests and residents through dedicated surveys, but above all we created moments of direct dialogue with the territory, because every strategic decision is born from participation and discussion.

In particular, we organised two participatory meetings involving more than 70 stakeholders from Garda Trentino.

19 giugno 2024

This first meeting focused on presenting the project and mapping the initiatives already active in Garda Trentino that align with GSTC criteria.

This was followed by four thematic discussion groups focusing on key challenges and opportunities for a more sustainable tourism management approach:

➔ tourism-related critical issues in Garda Trentino;
➔ the effects of climate change on the territory and tourism sector;
➔ sustainability-oriented marketing strategies;
➔ Destination Social Responsibility (DSR).

The latter topic — DSR — promotes the shared commitment of all destination stakeholders (institutions, businesses, citizens and guests) towards responsible tourism management.

The objective is to create a balance between economic development, environmental protection and social cohesion, moving beyond isolated actions to generate a positive impact across the territory.

21 novembre 2024

The second meeting focused on an update regarding the progress of the work developed together with Trentino Marketing – ATA Area and Etifor.

During the meeting, analyses from guest and resident surveys were presented, the first study results were shared and, most importantly, the new sustainability project sheets were validated.

These tools proved fundamental for structurally integrating sustainability into the Stay Young masterplan, strengthening the alignment between strategic vision and operational actions.

TOOLS AND DOCUMENTS

For those wishing to explore how the GSTC certification process was structured — and to better understand the analyses, decisions and tools adopted — all produced documents (in Italian language) can be downloaded here: reports, working materials, project sheets and much more.

A PROCESS DEVELOPED WITH THE TERRITORY

From audit to certification

On 8, 9 and 10 April 2025, the official GSTC audits for the Garda Trentino destination certification took place.

The process included two complementary phases: one and a half days of document analysis at our offices and one full day dedicated to field inspections involving a representative sample of local stakeholders.

Naturally, the process did not end with the audit. On 19th June, we celebrated an important first milestone with the diploma award ceremony for the destination and the first 10 accommodation facilities that successfully completed the audit. Since then, the number has grown to more than 20 certified accommodation facilities by the end of 2025.

A result confirming the shared commitment to making Garda Trentino an increasingly sustainable, credible and coherent destination aligned with the values of the Stay Young positioning.

GSTC certification is not an end point, but the beginning of a continuous improvement journey: the territory will undergo annual audits, during which it will need to demonstrate concrete progress in the actions undertaken.

All projects will continue to be developed through participatory approaches, strengthening the involvement of local stakeholders and consolidating a shared and inclusive governance model focused on long-term sustainability.

Sustainability does not end with certification: it is an ongoing journey of responsibility, awareness and improvement, seeking a balance between those who live in the territory every day and those who discover it for only a few days. A shared path made up of actions passed from hand to hand between operators, administrations, residents and guests, generating an increasingly virtuous process.

THE SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGIC PLAN

As required by the GSTC certification process, we developed a sustainability strategic plan specifically dedicated to the Garda Trentino destination. Here you can download it together with the certification dossier, including the report of the projects and activities implemented to meet GSTC criteria and the climate change appendix with a dedicated adaptation plan for our territory.

FROM ACTIONS TO MESSAGES

How can we communicate sustainability to our guests?

A more sustainable Garda Trentino — for us and for future generations — is an ambitious goal, but one we believe can be achieved step by step.

We chose to tell the story of this shared commitment — with both the territory and the people who visit us — through a dedicated section of our B2C website, where visitors can find useful information on experiencing Garda Trentino responsibly, discover sustainable experiences and services already available, and learn more about the concrete actions we are implementing as a destination.

SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION: A PRACTICAL CASE

The Youth Sailing World Championships

From 12 to 20 July 2024, we hosted the Youth Sailing World Championships, the world’s most important youth sailing event.

The event was entirely plastic-free, using durable dishes and cutlery, providing reusable water bottles to all participants and installing drinking water stations. It also achieved Platinum level certification from Clean Regattas, the leading sustainability certification for sailing events.

In addition, the regatta field was managed entirely using electric boats, while throughout the week several social events, talks and initiatives focused on sustainability and inclusivity took place.

WASTE SEPARATION
How to do it properly

Correct waste separation is a simple but important action for taking care of the territory.

For this reason, we have gathered all useful information and resources into one page to support operators and accommodation facilities: informational materials, practical guidelines and municipality-specific content to help you manage waste separation correctly.

SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH THE MEDIA

GSTC certification, Bus&Go, electric boats and many other initiatives: there are numerous active projects in Garda Trentino that we also promote through our communication channels, starting from our press office activities. In this section, we collect a selection of articles, interviews and features published by local media that tell the story of the territory’s commitment to increasingly sustainable tourism.
